Obituary for Addie “Bernice” Phelps (Barnett)

ADDIE “BERNICE” PHELPS

Addie Bernice Barnett began her journey through life on March 16th, 1926, in Murray, Kentucky. She was one of eleven children born to Lee Roy Barnett and Jessie Mae Weston-Barnett.

Along the way she met, fell in love with, and married Dolphus Hughes Phelps, also of Murray, in 1947. That union lasted 65 years and during that time, they had four children: Lana Rose Phelps, Karen Lee Phelps, Timothy Hughes Phelps, and Shari Gay Phelps.

Even with a full house, Bernice entered the workforce in the customer service industry, and retired from CVS as a Pharmacy Service Associate at the age of 82. She also travelled the United States, many times, from one coast to the other, and all points in-between.

Bernice had a love for cooking, and always a need to feed everyone! You never left her home hungry. She loved animals, and enjoyed all her four-legged family members and friends. She was known to have a green thumb and loved gardening.

Bernice ended her journey through life peacefully, at the age of 94, on December 12, 2020, at Nazareth Home (Newburg Road), in Louisville, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dolphus; her two daughters, Rose and Karen; her parents, one sister, and four brothers.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Shari; on Tim, along with his two children, her grandchildren, Joshua Lee Phelps and Jessica Leigh Phelps, whom she loved and adored, their mother Debra Phelps, her California son Mark Petersen, three sisters and two brothers.

The family would like to thank all the Doctors, Nurses, Caregivers, and especially the staff at Nazareth Home Newburg, for their compassion and care she received during her brief stay there.

Respecting her final wishes, cremation and a memorial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday, December 23, at 2:00 p.m.

During this difficult time of Covid-19, this will be a brief outdoor ceremony following the guidelines of limited attendance, mask wearing and social distancing. There will be no visitation, or post funeral reception.
