Obituary for Alma Joan Daugherty

A. Joan Daugherty, 90 of Louisville, passed away on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022 at Norton Hospice Pavilion.

Born September 17, 1931 to the late Stanley and Alma Daugherty, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Donald and David; a nephew, Roger Daugherty; and a niece, Sharon Fincher.

She is survived by her sister in law, Audrey Daugherty; nephews, Kevin Daugherty (Vicki), Blaine Daugherty (Trish); great nieces, Caitlin Souza (Jeff), Brooke Blackwell (Phil) and Claire Martin (Travis); great nephews, Samuel Daugherty and Eli Daugherty; and a great great niece, Penny Weedon.

Joan served as an active member of Southeast Christian Church as soloist and choir member in her earlier years, as well as being a soloist for many other churches in the area. At Southeast she was a member of the Cornerstone Class and worked with the Adult Travel Group and the Junior Bible Bowl program.

A graduate of Atherton High School, she received a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of Louisville where she was selected as a member of Phi Kappa Tau (Scholarship Fraternity) and Zeta Tau Alpha (Social Fraternity). She also received a MBA from the U of L Graduate School and did some post graduate work at Bellarmine University. She received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University College of U of L. She was employed at Appliance Park, General Electric Co., for over 38 years. After 6 weeks of retirement, she joined her brother David in a new endeavor he was creating, EAS Technologies, Inc. After 5 years, EAS, Inc. was merged with the conglomerate Ceridian and she retired again.

Joan also sang with several other choral groups, The Motet Singers, the Louisville Chorale and the KOA (KY Opera Association) as a member of the chorus and had several roles in commissioned operas under the direction of Moritz Bomhart. As an active alumnae of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, she served in many offices locally as well as being on the National Board of ZTA Housing Corporation. She received the ZTA Certificate of Merit, the Honor Ring, named the Outstanding Zeta in KY and the Panhellenic Outstanding Alumnae in Jefferson County.

In 1974 she was selected as the National Business woman of the Year for the American Business Woman’s Association. She was elected as a District VP, National Vice President and then National President in 1977-78. She continued to serve this organization as a District Conference Chair, Conference Treasurer and as an officer and chairman in her local chapter. All efforts were raising scholarships for women.

Always active, she was elected to the Forest Hills City Council and served eleven years as a council member and clerk and as mayor for two terms. She also was elected to the Royal Coach, Inc. Board and served several terms as president, secretary and vice president. As a long time member of the Crescent Hill Woman’s Club, she served in many capacities on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. In high school she was recognized for her volunteer work at Kosair Hospital and in later years was a volunteer at the new Kosair Children’s Hospital gift shop were she served as a salesperson and treasurer.

As a member of the U of L Alumni, Joan served 20 years on the Board of Directors. She was a volunteer in the Alumni Office overseeing the Alumni Travel Program and working with the Alumni Band Program.

Visitation will be from 10am - 12pm on Monday, July 25th, 2022, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY, with her funeral service at 12pm at the funeral home, and burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation, Southeast Christian Church Bible Bowl Program and Hosparus of Louisville.
