Obituary for Anthony Joseph Passafiume Jr.

Anthony Joseph Passafiume, Jr., was born July 26, 1934, and passed away February 16, 2023. After graduation from Flaget High School, he and his two brothers ran a small family produce business and grew it into a company that served the Louisville area for nearly seven decades.

AJ was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Anna Passafiume; his two brothers, Sebastian Paul and James J. Passafiume; the mother of his children, Joyce Hatfield Passafiume; and his late wife, Gloria Lanham Passafiume. He is survived by his two sisters, Mary Ann Passafiume Eaglin and Frances Passafiume Miller (David).

He is also survived by his four children, Georgia Lynn Passafiume Wurfel (Michael), Cindy Passafiume Richards (Greg), Kimberly Passafiume Thomas (Steven), and Anthony Joseph Passafiume, III. AJ was blessed with 8 grandchildren, Paul Edwards (Hollye) Robert Wurfel, William Roy (Samantha), Danny Wurfel, Jessica Passafiume Welch (Bobby), Amy Wurfel, Jenna Richards, and Anthony Joseph Passafiume, IV; along with 8 great-grandchildren, Brianna Wurfel, Marley and Sophia Edwards, Blythe Thompson, Jasmine and Adam Welch, Jacob Wurfel, and Blake Roy.

He is survived by his wife’s children, Rodney Martin, Greg Martin, Jeff Hignite (Jennifer), and Tonya Hignite Rakowski (Dan); seven grandchildren, John Martin, Clay Martin, Jeffrey, Michael and Zachary Hignite, Brittany Overcash and Brooke Englund; and great-grandchildren, Weston, Callum, Emma, and Morgan Hignite, Braden and Ellie Englund, and Everett Overcash.

AJ was proud and honored to serve through the ranks of Kosair Shriners and was the 1990 Potentate, Board Member of Kosair Hospital, Kosair Charities, Circus Chair, Kosair Car Club, Boaz Masonic Lodge #850, Scottish Rite Valley of Louisville, and Past-President of the Italian American Club. He was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Louisville for his charitable work. He enjoyed camping and was an avid bowler.

Visitation will be from 3 - 6 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. His funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 20, 2023, at St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church, 1104 S. 6th Street, with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery, 1600 Newburg Road.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to his caregivers at The Villa of Guerin and Gentiva for his Hospice care. His favorite Charities were Little Sisters of the Poor, Kosair Charities, or the Padre Pio Foundation, if you wish to honor his memory.
