Obituary for Barbara Hale (Fry)

It is with deep sadness that the family of Barbara Fry Hale announces her passing on August 27, 2018. She was born to Walter L. and Margaret S. Fry on November 18, 1927 in Scarsdale, New York and moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, early in life. She graduated from Cranbrook High School in Bloomfield Hills and from Monticello Women’s College in Godfrey, Illinois. She married Richard E. Hale and they moved to Louisville where they resided the remainder of their days.

Barbara was a lover of animals and was never without an animal companion. She loved horses from her first Shetland pony “Bucky” to all those she rode in competitions as a champion 5 gaited horse show competitor. She traveled extensively over the course of her life and was an avid reader often keeping a written diary of those books she read containing her critique.

Known as “Mom Hale” to many, her home in Seneca Gardens was an open door as her children were always allowed to have friends at the dinner table or overnight. Those who got a seat at the table were lucky indeed as Barbara was an exquisite cook. She is a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild for many years.

She retired from JC Penney after 20 years where she loved working and had many friends.

Barbara is predeceased by her husband, Richard E. Hale. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Geoffrey (Jessica Swim) Hale, John Hale, Jamie Hale and Sally Hale, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40205 Tuesday, September 4, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A private cemetery service will be held for family.

Special thanks to the staff at Friendship Health & Rehab in Pewee Valley, Kentucky and Hosparus of Louisville.

Memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to Old Friends Equine, a retirement home for thoroughbred race horses, 1841 Paynes Depot Road, Georgetown, Kentucky 40324.
