Obituary for Barbara Montgomery (Meyer)

Barbara Meyer Montgomery, (91) passed away peacefully at home on November 15, 2022. She was born on September 13, 1931, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of the late Henry C. Meyer and Sarah Jane Rhoads Meyer. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Raymond E. Montgomery, Jr. (Big Ray), a daughter, Marie Michelle Montgomery, a grandson, Michael Nohea Becker, a sister, Jo Anne Meyer Riordan of St. Louis, MO, and brothers Chapman G. Meyer and Robert H. Meyer, both of St. Petersburg, FL.

She is survived by her children: Jane Ellen Montgomery Becker Ostertag, Raymond E. “Chip” Montgomery III (Bets), Stephen Paul Montgomery (Pamela), Lauren Elizabeth Montgomery Annear (Bill), and Maria Meyer “Mia” Montgomery Washle (Scott). She also leaves to cherish her memory, her grandchildren: Colleen Becker Abston (Matt); Chapman (Katie), Charlie Ray (Erin), Will (Mary), and Ben (Morgan) Montgomery, and Leigh Montgomery Crady (Shane); Stephen (Taylor), Sydney, and Stewart Paige Montgomery; Ally and Caitlin Annear; and Scott (Brittany), Logan and Grayson Washle; great-grandchildren Dylan Flikkie (Lindsey), Ethan and Audrey Abston; Leo and CB Montgomery; Luella Crady; Raymond, Clara Rose and Norman Montgomery; Wyatt Montgomery; and Sage and Wells Montgomery; and great-great granddaughters, Grace and Clara Flikkie. She is also survived by her sister, Sally Meyer Stanley (Dr. Robert) of Birmingham, AL and sister-in-law Mary Ann Meyer of St. Petersburg, FL.

Barbara graduated from Visitation Academy in St. Louis and attended Webster University of Webster Groves, MO. From 1928 to 1947, her father Henry Meyer, owned and operated the steamboat Idlewild, which is now the Belle of Louisville. County Judge Marlow Cook appointed Barbara to the first Advisory Board and she was later made an honorary captain of the Belle of Louisville.

She was a charter member of the Bellarmine Women’s Council and served as its sixth president. During her term, the Council started the Designer Show House as a fundraiser for scholarship programs at Bellarmine. She also served from 1979-1987 on the Bellarmine University Board of Trustees. She was the Secretary of Montgomery Chevrolet, and served on the Advisory Board of Trustees for the St. Anthony Medical Center as secretary, and the Highlands Medical Center. She also served on the Family Relations Center Board and was past chairman, and on the first Board of Directors of the James Graham Brown Regional Cancer Center. She also served with Emmett Ratterman as co-chairperson of the Archdiocese Fund (ADF), and with Dr. Eugene V. Petrik as co-chairperson of the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA). She was the recipient of the Catholic Schools Distinguished Alumnae Award and a Kentucky Colonel. In 2006, she was awarded the Alfred F. Horrigan Medal for Meritorious Service. She was a member of the John Marshall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Woman’s Club of Louisville, The Bellarmine Women’s Council, Big Spring Country Club, St. Frances of Rome Parish, The Webster Girls, and her Bridge Club.

Affectionately known as Mimi by family and friends, she never met a stranger and always made you feel welcomed and at ease. She was a loving mother and followed an active schedule of many activities surrounding sports, the arts, and other interests that enhanced the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greats! She was passionate about education, and was engaged as a parent, making sure her children grew up to be confident and productive. Her zest for life, her love of travel and her thirst for learning caused her to be an exuberant personality and oh so much fun to be around. She believed strongly in the power of prayer and provided a great example of faith and spirituality.

Visitation is on Sunday, November 20 from 4-8 pm at Highlands Funeral Home 3331 Taylorsville Road. The funeral Mass and burial will be private. The family wishes to express appreciation to all who cared for Mimi, with a particular thank you to Dr. Paul Loheide and the Hosparus Health staff who cared for her so lovingly.
