Obituary for Berta Schupbach (Cazares)

Berta Maria Cazares Schupbach passed away on October 19th, 2021, after a joyful life full of family, friends, and travel.

She was born on April 17, 1929, in Uruapan, Michoacán, Mexico, to Braulio Cazares and Maria Elvira Barbosa. She is survived by her sister, Victoria Alvarez de Campos (Tirso); her brother, Alfredo Alvarez (Sofia); her stepdaughters, Rebecca Schupbach (Jeff Baugher), Theresa Schupbach-Gordon (Toby Gordon), Christine Schupbach; their children, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Schupbach; her sister, Amalia Alvarez de Sánchez Mejorada; two brothers, Fernando Alvarez and Carlos Alvarez; and her first husband, Carl Blaskowsky.

Berta spoke five languages and taught English in Mexico and Spanish in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While living in Mexico, she volunteered and was a supporter for an assisted living facility know as Asilo de Ancianos La Providencia.

She became a naturalized citizen of the United States. She was a world traveler, taking trips to Mexico, Europe, China, Canada, and in many parts of the United States. She met her husband, Harold Schupbach, when they were both traveling in Spain with separate tour groups. Berta arranged to join the other tour for the day and sat in the only vacant seat on the tour bus, which happened to be next to Harold.

Berta loved classical music and art. She enjoyed attending concerts and taking classes at the University of Louisville, earning her second masters degree as a Donovan Scholar. She had many kind and devoted friends with whom she enjoyed lively discussions about books and travel. She was raised in the Catholic faith, and found comfort and support in her faith throughout her life.

The family wishes to express their gratitude for the compassionate and skilled care she received at The Altenheim, and from Hosparus of Louisville.

Berta will be buried at Funeria del Angel Palm Valley in Pharr, Texas. Mass will be held for her at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan, Texas.

There will also be a memorial service to celebrate her life at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 27th, at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 1520 Hepburn Avenue, Louisville. Friends, family and caregivers are welcome.
