Obituary for Betty Lorraine Hovey Eggers (Hovey)

Betty Lorraine Hovey Eggers, 94, of Louisville passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022.

A strong and caring mother of three, she was surrounded by those who loved her on her last Mother’s Day.
Born in Belvidere, Ill., she moved from the family farm with her parents and brother at a young age to Madison, Wisc., where the family ran a rooming house that initially housed University of Wisconsin students.

Betty's now-deceased husband, Allan Eggers, and Betty moved from their native Wisconsin to Louisville in 1956. Betty quickly got involved in the community, and, in fact, was a key driver – along with her Highgate Springs volunteer group – in convincing the City of Louisville to build the Bon Air branch of the Free Public Library.

She was very active up until her death with the Gatewood Homemakers, Hikes Point Women’s Club and her beloved lunch group, the “Dippy Diners.” With each of these groups, God’s work was done as they volunteered their time, talent and treasure toward a number of charitable endeavors that benefited families and children in need in the Louisville community.

In the past, Betty also volunteered her time with Jefferson County Public Schools’ PTA groups; plus, as a former proud Girl Scout, she worked with that group locally as well. She also was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church.

Known as an incredible baker of pies and cookies, Betty won the 1987 national Archway Homestyle Cookie contest. Initial plans by Archway to distribute the Banana-coconut chocolate chip cookie on a mass level nationally stalled, however, as the ingredients proved too “costly” to reproduce on that scale. (Her story appeared in The Courier-Journal Neighborhoods section in September 1988.

Betty also won numerous Kentucky State Fair blue ribbons for strawberry jams (where she and her kids picked fresh strawberries off the vines at Huber’s Farm), various pies and other desserts. In addition, she was a talented amateur photographer, winning several blue ribbons for her photos that drew the attention of her keen eye.

She loved spending time and doting on her family, which included seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Steven Eggers (Kathie) and Andy Eggers (Julie); a daughter, Lori Saxby (Carl); grandchildren, Jessica, Andrea, Matthew, Erin, Allison, Jakob and Maggie; her great grandchildren and her loving Wisconsin family.

She is, and will be, deeply missed by family and her many friends.

Her visitation will be Saturday, May 21, 2022, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Ky. A memorial service will follow visitation at 3 p.m. A private burial will take place at a later date.
