Obituary for Carl Denhard Steineker

Carl Denhard “Denny” Steineker, 84, of Louisville, KY passed Monday morning, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth, daughter Caroline Steineker Powell, son-in-law Jason, grandsons Owen and Easton, and granddaughter Isabelle, son Martin Steineker and daughter-in-law Katie, brother Bob Steineker and sister-in-law Lynne, nephews David and Lee Steineker and their spouses and children. He was preceded in death by his mother Marguerite, and father Carl.
Denny was born and raised in Louisville, on Winston Avenue in the Strathmoor Gardens neighborhood. He attended Melbourne Heights Elementary, Highland Junior High, and Manual High School where he graduated in 1951 earning varsity letters in 4 sports, winning various championships, along with many academic and extracurricular honors, All-State and Yale Award among them. He attended the University of Kentucky and Centre College, where he graduated with his Bachelors degree, and later took graduate classes at University of Louisville. Denny served in the U.S. Army at Fort Detrick, Maryland from 1956 to 1958, where he also developed life-long friendships.
Some of Denny’s fondest memories are of the friends he grew up with, went to school with, and his football teammates at Manual H.S. and Centre College, whom he spoke of regularly, up to his passing. He cherished having been able to maintain relationships as far back as first grade with some. He proudly attended his class reunions of grade school, Manual, and Centre College, and always enjoyed getting together with them. The bonds he formed with those men are forever appreciated.
Denny’s dedication to his family was unparalleled. Responsibility to family was most important to him, and the foremost was his love of Elizabeth, whom he always thought of as his beautiful bride. Time spent with family was his favorite time, especially Christmas. He was famous for his Christmas decorations, especially his village, his Christmas clothes, and his Christmas shopping. Shopping was his hobby, all year round, with incredible patience and care.
Denny worked for Standard Oil in the 1960’s, and for ICI Americas at the Indiana Ammunitions plant from 1968 to 1989 where he semi-retired. He later worked at the U.S. Census Bureau, and at HUD, and finally for United Parcel Service from 1997 to 2010, where he retired again, with great respect for government and UPS.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. His Funeral Services will be Thursday, 10AM, at Strathmoor Presbyterian Church, with graveside to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to Strathmoor Presbyterian Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
