Obituary for Charles James Brunner "Speed"

Charles James Brunner "Speed"
Charles James Brunner “Speed”, 89, passed away on Friday, April 6th at Green Valley Care Community in New Albany, IN. surrounded by his children.

Speed was born on May 25, 1928 in Buffalo, NY to the late Charles and Mae Brunner. He grew up in the greater Buffalo area, graduating from Kensigton HS in 1948. He attended college at Buffalo State Teachers College finishing in 1952 with B.S. in art education.

He served in the Army from August 1952 to August 1954. Stationed in Fort Knox he developed visual materials for Army training manuals, programs and publications. He met his wife Betty Barnard who was working there as a nurse. Together they had two children, Sallie Jane Southard and John Charles (Shannon) Brunner.

From 1956 to 1987 he worked as an art director for several agencies in Louisville including: Becker Advertising, T Jefferson Wright, Ott Studios and Design Innovations Inc.

Speed was a lifelong teacher who valued learning and believed in educating each person as an individual. He embraced that design could be seen in virtually everything in life. Up to the end of his life, he wanted to teach and help others learn.

He loved conversations about art, ideas and what was waiting on the other side of life here on earth. In his later years he especially sought out parents with young children to encourage them to invest in their child’s development and learning.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Brunner and sister, Carol Stachura.

In addition to his children, Speed is survived by his granddaughters, Emily, Lucy, Margaret and Frances Brunner.

His memorial visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2018 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.
