Obituary for Clara Alice Gering (Palmer)

Clara “Alice” Gering passed away peacefully on December 6th, 2020, at Baptist Hospital Palliative Care, due to complications of COVID-19. She was 97 years young.

Born to Clara Florence Palmer and Richard Edgar Palmer, she was the fourth of five children. Her siblings, Frank, Wilson, Lowell and Elizabeth, had wonderful daughters who were so attentive to their “Aunt Clare Alice”, and we are so grateful to them for that.

Alice grew up in Cynthiana, KY, where she was raised on a farm; her childhood was filled with many fond memories. As a teenager, she was quite proud of her involvement with the 4-H Club.

She was a loyal, long-standing member of the Queen’s Daughters and the Bellarmine Women’s Council; as well as a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Her faith was her strength, and she attended Mass every Sunday until the pandemic began.

Alice was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling, travel and bridge. She had many careers: homemaker, secretary, kindergarten teacher, and bank teller; while also obtaining her realtor’s license.

A self-proclaimed “jack of all trades, but master of none,” she excelled most of all at raising her children and being Grandma to her 12 grandchildren and 10 great grand-children, with three more on the way.

Alice’s kindness, candor, and quick wit made her a pleasure to be around. She made many friends and brought out the best in the people around her at Magnolia Springs, where she resided. Always up for bingo or a card game, she enjoyed staying active.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Jay; and her son, Alan. She is survived by Janet Mangeot (Paul), Richard Gering (Cheri), Carol O’Bryan (Chris), Janey Jennings (Doug), and daughter-in-law, Marcia Gering (Fred Shuck).

Funeral arrangements are pending with Highlands Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to either Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosencrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266. Make checks payable to PanCan, or Mass of the Air, 1200 S. Shelby St., Louisville, KY 40203.
