Obituary for David Christian Mehl

MEHL, David Christian, 44, died peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2013 with family members at his side, after a heroic battle against cancer.
He was a much loved, intellectually gifted, inquisitive, multi-talented, kind and thoughtful man with a great sense of humor who loved life. He also loved music, soccer, animals, reading, Michigan football, scuba diving, spelunking, mountain climbing, hiking, camping, sky diving, motorcycling and most of all, his family and friends.
Dave had a love for marine biology, particularly the social learning of the octopus, and received a grant for this work while he pursued a Ph.D. from the University of Louisville. He left this endeavor when he was given his diagnosis in order to focus his efforts on the fight and his family.
He retired early from Ohio Valley Educational Co-Operative where he was Chief Technology Officer.
Survivors include his wife, Shelley; their sons, Christian and Graham; his sister, Amy Mehl Romines (Steven); nephews, Nolan, Jacob and Connor; niece, Gabrielle; his parents, Diane and David J. Mehl; and many other beloved extended family members.
There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, June 12th from 4-5 p.m. preceded by visitation from 1-4 p.m. at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. There will also be a more traditional Christian service celebrating David’s life that evening at 7 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 8305 Nottingham Parkway, 40222.
