Donna Lee Gilmore Mackey

Donna Lee Gilmore Mackey, aged 68, passed away peacefully on November 30 at Nazareth Home on Payne St in Louisville’s Clifton neighborhood. She was born on October 27th 1955 in Louisville, Ky, to Mary Ann and Bill Gilmore. She attended St Francis of Assisi Elementary, Sacred Heart Academy and graduated from Atherton High School 1973. Donna was married to Robert “Monk” Mackey and they raised their daughter, Leah Frances Mackey, to become a successful advertising executive with prominent companies such as Papa Johns, Churchill Downs and Krispy Krunchy Chicken. Donna was also married to Johnny Michael Atnip, whom she called Johnny Angel. They lived and loved in their Highlands home for many years.

In addition to her great passion for her daughter and husband, Donna loved antiques. She enjoyed collecting, buying and selling antiques. She and her sister, Linda Marie, partnered with their Aunt Maurine to operate an antiques store. Stones Throw Shoppes was a favorite haunt for local antiquers for many years on Barret Ave in Louisville. In addition to the antiques business, Donna had a long career with Kentucky horse racing tracks Churchill Downs, Louisville Downs and Keenland and was a proud union member of SEIU Racetrack Employees Union Local 541. She retired from Churchill Downs in the late 2010s.

Donna was very outgoing. Her smile was infectious and could always light up a room. She loved the Louisville music scene and dancing with friends. Her only granddaughter, Ivy, brought her great joy and pride. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Mary Ann Gilmore; two sisters, Linda Marie and Jenny Lind Gilmore; and her aunt, Maurine Stone. She is survived by her husband, Johnny Atnip; daughter, Leah Frances Schultz (Jonathan); granddaughter, Iverson Flair; her older sister, Gail Ann Young; step-brother, Matthew Bonar and step-sister, Marcie Bonar; uncle, John Stone, and aunt , Anne Stone Johnson; nephews, Colby (Jennifer) and Brent (Dominic); nieces, Rebecca, Sara and Rachael; great nephews, Dillian, Sean Thomas, Nathen Gene, Ryker: great nieces, Haley and Adison; cousins, Edward (Becky) and John; longtime care giver and friend, KeeKee Malone; and a large group of friends from so many corners of her big life.

Friends, and others are invited to the Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville KY, from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Sunday, 12/10/23, with her funeral service at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1920 Newburg Road, on Monday 12/11/23 at 10:00 am, where we will reminisce and honor the life of our dear Donna.
