Obituary for Dorothy Smith Gilsdorf

GILSDORF, DOROTHY S., 95, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Norton Suburban Hospital.
Born in Seattle, WA on January 25, 1915, she was the daughter of Edith Anderson smith and Glen Smith.
She attended the University of Washington and obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Louisville. She began her singing career at the age of 16 and married her husband, the late Albert G. Gilsdorf in 1936, just before moving to Louisville. She performed in the first KY Opera production. In 1949 she was the soloist in a WHAS Radio Production, "Music Under The Stars" with Milton Metz serving as the announcer. It was a production advertising the grand opening of the Iroquois Park Amphitheater. She sang as a soloist at the Temple B-Roth Shalom for over 20 years at Highland Presbyterian Church and 4th Ave. Methodist Church. She appeared as a soloist on a record titled Foure' Requiem Choral Union. She taught voice at Ohio State University, University of Louisville, and at the Louisville Collegiate School for 27 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; brothers, Gordon and George Smith of Seattle, WA and Ben Smith of S. Thomas, MA.
She is survived by sons, Thomas (Mary), Clark "Corky", and a nephew she raised since his early teens, and considered a son, Jack, of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Brad and Traci; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation was chosen and she will be encrypted in Resthaven Cemetery. A celebration of life will be 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Horizon Bay Chapel, 901 Blankenbaker Pkwy in Louisville.
In lieu of flowers, Dorothy requests a gift of your choice be given to Highlands Presbyterian Church.
