Obituary for Dr. Russell T. May Sr.

Dr. Russell T. May, age 78, entered into eternal rest on December 25th, 2020, surrounded by family at his home. He was a generous and loving husband, father, grandfather, and physician. In his free time, he pursued his passion for art, antiques, horse racing, golf, and Kentucky basketball. His unique sense of humor brought joy to all.

Russell received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky in 1968. From 1969-71, he served in the U.S. Army as a General Medical Officer and Battalion Surgeon in the Republic of Vietnam. During his service, he earned a Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, a Combat Medical Badge, two Bronze Stars—one for Service and another for Valor—and a Purple Heart. He earned the Bronze Star in particular for his heroic efforts in assisting fallen comrades in combat. He was wounded in his attempts to save others; for this he was awarded a Purple Heart.

He completed his residency at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in 1974 and practiced Internal Medicine until his retirement in 2017. Dr. May was highly respected by his colleagues and dearly loved by his patients.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathryn; his six children, Andrea Bringard (Larry), Susan Lavrin (Darran), Russell May, Jr. (Kelsey), Gregory May (Audrey), Brian May, Lauren Matsubara (Matthew); and seven grandchildren, Lawrence Bringard (Bethany) and Michael Bringard; Taylor, Ryan, and Rachel Lavrin; Charlie and Clara May.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Autism Society of Kentuckiana or Tunnel to Towers. A private funeral will be held for the immediate family and a life celebration will be announced at a later date.
