Obituary for Dr. Steven Riggert

Print
Dr. Steve Riggert, 66, of Louisville, KY passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018 at Norton Healthcare Pavilion. Steve was a proud Iowa State alumnus where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Distributed Studies. He began a teaching career in Omaha, Nebraska where he met his wife, Joan, with whom he celebrated 37 years of marriage by renewing vows last Thanksgiving. After leaving the classroom, Steve earned an MBA and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Louisville. He completed his Post Doctorate at M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital in Pediatrics in Houston, TX, and was Director of Psychology for Frazier Rehab Hospital and Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital. He retired in June 2018.

A dedicated Psychologist by profession, Steve was devoted in life to Joan and his children, Chris (Detroit) and Anna (Louisville) who would often hear him say his "love and pride for them was beyond words." He was their biggest fan and cheerleader at every sports event or music performance he attended. He was a lifelong learner, a lover of history and of jazz. Steve was a kind man who valued integrity and honesty and lived by that code.

Although he was not known to enjoy public speaking, in recent years Steve did so with great passion, both privately and publicly, as an advocate to protect individuals' essential health care benefits, especially those with pre-existing conditions.

Steve was born in Eldora, Iowa, in 1952 to parents Chris Henry and Bernice Louise Riggert who predecease him. He is survived by his brothers and their spouses, Robert and Marian (Denver, CO) and James and Pam (Cedar Rapids, IA). Very special to him are nephews Justin Riggert (Ami), Aaron Riggert (Donna), and nieces Kirsten Osborne (Paul), Sarah Wickham (Ron), and Meagan Riggert (Scott).

Steve has chosen to donate his body to Science Care. A Visitation and Celebration of Life will be held November 10th, at Highland Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd from 1-5 PM with his Memorial Service at 3 PM. The family would be grateful if memorials were directed to Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 415 Crossways Park Drive, Suite D., Woodbury, NY 11797 or lustgarten.org/donate.
