Obituary for Edgar Earl Hatfield

Edgar Earl Hatfield, 91, of Louisville, passed from life abundant to life everlasting on Friday, April 23, 2021.

Eddie Hatfield was born and raised in Louisville. He graduated from Male High School (1947½), Georgetown College (1952, B.A.), Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (1955, M.Div; 1956, Th.M.), and Phillips University (1978, D.Min.). He was a member of various professional organizations related to Christian counseling and institutional development.

Dr. Hatfield began preaching at age sixteen. He has pastored full-time at five different churches in Kentucky, two in Illinois, one in Oklahoma (which honored him as Pastor Emeritus), as well as multiple interim pastorates.

He also served the Southern Seminary as a Development Director, concluding his tenure as a beloved teacher of ministry formation for collegians and seminarians on campus.

His ministry was characterized by the wisdom of scripture, the courage of conviction, the integrity of calling, the mercy of sacrifice, and the joy of salvation. His exuberance, enthusiasm, and kindness encouraged and inspired, flowing from his abiding commitment to Jesus Christ.

Eddie is preceded in death by his mother, Ona Ann Cooper Hatfield Denton; and brothers, Jesse Amos Hatfield, Jr. and Lionel Cooper Hatfield, Sr.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Jo Ann (Shain) Hatfield; his sons, Daniel Earl Hatfield (Menda Sue) and John Edgar Hatfield; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hatfield; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, plus eleven nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be May 4, Tuesday 2-5 p.m., at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. The service of celebration will be 6:30 p.m. in Audubon Baptist Church, 1046 Hess Lane. Interment at Resthaven Cemetery will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 5.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent in honor of Eddie Hatfield to the Peruvian Missions of Audubon Baptist Church or Helping Hands Companion Care Services.
