Edith Paula Sammons
January 30, 1937 - July 14, 2022

Edith Paula Sammons, 85, died in Louisville, KY, on July 14, 2022. She was born in Aurora, IN, on January 30, the daughter of Raymond and Edna Mae Payne. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, James Thomas Sammons, in August of 1994.

She is survived by her children, Paula Sammons Tussey, Thomas C. Sammons, and Jamie R. Sammons; her grandchildren, Curtis Tussey, Matthew Tussey, Thomas W. Sammons, and Lee Sammons; three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Mavis L. Payne Abraham.

She grew up in Louisville, Kentucky until she left to attend Eastern Kentucky University, where she met her husband, Tom. She later graduated with a B.A. from Morehead University and a Masters in Education from Marshall University. She taught English, French and Remedial Reading at Raceland High School for 23 years.

Her love for learning continued throughout her life. She was an avid reader and attended conversational French classes with Alliance Francaise. As an avid traveler both domestic and abroad, she was most recently able to fulfill a personal goal by visiting the Alhambra on a trip to Spain and France in fall 2021. She was a life-long Methodist and a member of Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m., service to follow at 2 p.m., on Thursday, July 21, at Highland's Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd., Louisville.

A memorial service will be held graveside at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 22, at Bellefonte Memorial Cemetery in Flatwoods, Kentucky.

Memorial donations can be made to the Kentucky United Methodist Children's Home or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
