Obituary for Elena Lynch (Del Gaudio)

Elena Del Gaudio Lynch, 91 passed away on December 30, 2018 at the Hosparus Inpatient Care Center in the Norton Medical Pavilion. During her last days she was surrounded by family and friends; her passing was peaceful. Born in Frosinone, Italy, May 22, 1927 to Luigi Del Gaudio and Guglielmina Angora, she met the love of her life, Eugene R. Lynch Jr., in Naples, Italy. They married in New York City in 1947 and settled in Louisville several years later. Elena supported Gene’s forty two year Navy career and still was able to complete an undergraduate and a Master’s degree at the University of Louisville. She was also elected to the Phi Beta Kappa society. Their shared values of family, faith, education, tradition and hard work carried them through their long and happy marriage. Theirs was a beautiful family of four children, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Elena studied six languages, mastered four, was a talented seamstress and a frugal and industrious homemaker. She passed along knowledge and a love of learning through her career as a language professor. Her most cherished years of teaching were ones at Angela Merici High school, where she was also chairman of the language department. A devout Catholic, her strong faith was the foundation on which she built her family and lived her life.
Survivors include her daughters, Anna Newkirk, Sally Jean Lynch (Pierluigi Falanga); a son, Michael D. Lynch (Donna), grandchildren, Patrick (Amela)Spradling, Rebecca (Jose) Cervoni, Maggie (Jay) Selwood, Luca Falanga, Michelle (Damian) Hart, Joseph Lynch, Jeannine (Andrew) Kohler, Brittany Lynch; and eight great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, Eugene R. Lynch, Jr.; a son, Eugene R. Lynch III; and son-in-law, Bill Newkirk.
