Obituary for Elmer J. Nitzken Jr.

Elmer J. Nitzken Jr.
Elmer Joseph Nitzken, Jr. ("Bud", "Pop") a resident of Louisville, KY passed Tuesday morning, May 29, 2018. He was 85 years of age.
Bud is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Shirley Nitzken (Wimsett); his three children: Marty Nitzken (Marianne), Gary Nitzken (Laura), and Connie Nitzken Mulcrone (John). Bud had nine grandchildren: Mollie, Shane, Shelby, Anna, Lillie, Kyle, Martin, Ben, and Samantha. Bud was preceded in death by his loving parents, Elmer J., Sr. and Kathryn Nitzken.
Bud cherished his time growing up in the West End of Louisville. We will all recall the many stories of his childhood upbringing at Christ the King Parish and Flaget High School. He attended St. Joseph College before ultimately completing his studies at the University of Louisville.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Bud served his country in the United States Air Force. The stories from his travels during his time in the service will always be treasured. Following the Air Force he owned and operated the family business, Nitzken Insurance Agency. Though he "retired," he was never too far away from the office and was there every day up until his passing.
Bud had a passion for horse racing, telling jokes, and his dogs. He was a avid sports fan, spending time at Churchill Downs and cheering on the University of Kentucky. He was a loving father, grandfather, and husband. His humor and dedication will be truly missed.
Bud’s Funeral Mass will be at 9 AM on Friday, June 1 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 508 Breckenridge Ln, St Matthews, KY 40207. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 – 8 PM on Thursday, May 31 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Louisville, KY 40205.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Joseph Children's Home, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or the charity of your choice.
