Obituary for Eugene (Gene) Paul Bohn

Eugene (Gene) Paul Bohn

Born May 28, 1930, Gene passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2022. He was 92 years young. Gene was an Army veteran who served from 1953-1955. While serving in the army, he met his future bride, Martha Bissmeyer, at a Fort Knox USO dance. Gene was lucky enough to participate in the October 20, 2021, Bluegrass Honor Flight with his two sons.

Gene graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1948 and from the University of Louisville Speed Scientific School with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1953. He was a registered professional engineer in Kentucky and Florida. He worked 40+ years for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad which later merged with the CSX Railroad. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he was transferred to Jacksonville, Florida, with CSX and lived there for 16 years. During his career, he received multiple awards. The most prestigious was the CSX Award of Excellence in 1987 for the Corbin Terminal Expansion Project. He was involved with many professional organizations and was the chairman of American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association Committee 6. Upon retirement in 1993, he returned to Louisville.

Gene was extremely proud of the five children he and Martha raised together. Faith was central to his life, and he was an active member of St. Stephen Martyr, Christ the King, and St. Gabriel Catholic Churches. He and Martha enjoyed activities and fellowship at the Jeffersontown Senior Center. He also volunteered countless hours with Martha at Sister Visitors, Meals-on-Wheels, and Little Sisters of the Poor. His hobbies included reading, golf, gardening, playing cards, wood working and watching the stock market. He was an avid U of L fan with season tickets and loved to cheer on his Cards. Gene loved to travel around the country and the world with family and friends. Accidentally hitting a cow in Mexico led to one of his best travel stories and a great brother-in-law.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Julia (Friess) and Frank Bohn; brothers, Charles Bohn and Thomas Bohn (Mary Jo Mattingly); and grandsons, Nicholas Bohn and Jonathan Foster.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Martha (Bissmeyer); sister, Doris Cascino (Lou); children, Helene Kennedy (Steve); Julia Muller (Conrad); Gene Bohn (Caroline Dale); Jim Bohn (Beth Rayome); Marty Budetti (Tony); grandchildren, Alex Kennedy (Ashley); Ryan Kennedy (Katie); Morgan Tierney (Matt); Elise Kennedy; Cort Muller (Brittany); Stefanie Muller; Amanda Foster; Zach Bohn (Haley); Kayla Bohn; Lexi Bohn; Maggie Bohn; James Bohn; Sam Budetti; Julia Budetti and Ava Budetti; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
