Obituary for Frances Masden Lloyd

Frances Masden Lloyd, 84, passed away at Barton House of Louisville on August 8, 2022.

She was born on June 23, 1938, in Indianapolis, IN, and was adopted as an infant by her loving mother, Varina Dawson Masden, in Louisville, KY.

When she was just a few years old, Frances and her mother moved to Varina’s farm on Wilson’s Creek near Lebanon Junction, Kentucky, where they kept the farm going through the Great Depression and WWII. They later returned to Louisville where Frances became a proud graduate of Ahrens Trade High School in 1956.

Frances pursued her career in education when she attended Campbellsville University and graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor of Science degree and her teaching certificate. Among the bright spots of her time at U of L was meeting her husband, John A. Lloyd, with whom she recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Frances began her teaching career at Roosevelt Elementary in Louisville; she loved teaching and forged lifelong friendships with her fellow teachers. She retired from teaching in 1969 to start her family, but remained passionate and engaged in childhood education all her life.

Frances’s childhood on Wilson’s Creek taught her the value of hard work, self-reliance, and instilled a love of animals and nature — values she carried throughout her life and passed along to her children. She embodied the spirit of a Helper by placing the well-being of others before self.

Frances dedicated her boundless energy to her many passions; chief among them was raising two happy and successful children. She loved seeing them grow into adults who loved their careers and inherited her commitment to community service. Frances volunteered for Broadway Baptist Church, where she focused on youth activities and helped wherever and whenever needed. Additionally, she was an active volunteer at her children’s schools, and later a member of PEO. She supported the success of her husband and children through her hard work and social nature.

She radiated a cheerful spirit, was quick to laugh and tease; and her sincere kindness helped bring people together in every circumstance.

Frances and John enjoyed traveling, hosting friends and family for dinners, and spending time with family; particularly John’s family in Texas, where they spent many happy vacations.

Frances was preceded in death by her mother, Varina Dawson Masden; her in-laws, Russell and Lela Lloyd (Bryan, TX); and her son, J. Russell Lloyd.

Frances is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Rebecca; son-in-law, David Forestieri; daughter-in-law, Victoria Hesen Lloyd; granddaughter, Elaine; and nephews, John, Jerry, and Judson, along with their spouses and families.

We will always miss her laugh and ready smile.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 11th, 4:00 - 7:00 PM, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Her funeral service will be held on Friday, August 12th, 10:00 AM, at Broadway Baptist Church, 4000 Brownsboro Rd., with burial to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Broadway Baptist Church or Hosparus of Louisville.
