Obituary for Fred W. Schardein II

Fred W. Schardein II, Louisville, age 85 ~ Loved by so many, Fred passed away on Tuesday, May 31st at the age of 85. He was born on August 8, 1936 to Fred and Beatrice Schardein. Fred grew up in the Louisville area and attended New Albany high school. He attended Purdue University, was in the Theta-Tau fraternity and graduated as an electrical engineer. Fred worked at Allen Bradley for his entire 34-year career, retiring at age 55 as Vice President.

Fred met the love of his life Glenna R. Schardein on a blind date while at Purdue and they enjoyed a 62-year honeymoon before her death on April 11, 2022.

Fred served in the Army and was past Commander of the Louisville Power Squadron. He led an adventurous life with Glenna traveling the world. He lived in the Netherlands for 3 years traveling all over Europe. Fred and Glenna also went to the Soviet Union while under communism. He especially enjoyed a six-week vacation to New Zealand, Australia and New Guinea. Fred enjoyed playing golf, tennis, bowling plus the occasional hunting and fishing trips.

Fred helped design and build a 72 ft. custom trawler named Sea Lion. He owned many different boats in his life and loved cruising on the Ohio River. Fred had many hobbies including spending 6 years building an entire model HO scale railroad with a full town around it the size of 12’ x 16’. He loved to go to Open Range for target practice and was an excellent marksman. Fred enjoyed a good pipe and bourbon.

Please have a toast in his honor to celebrate his life. He is survived by his caring daughter, Linda Jacobs (Ken); son, Cliff Schardein (Donna); his grandchildren, Veronica Schardein, Nicholas Jacobs, Allison Jacobs; and his sister, Linda Porter (Carl).

Visitation will be at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, on Friday, June 3rd from 3 pm - 6 pm. Private burial will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery at 11 am on Saturday, June 4th.
