Gary Hines was born in Wilmington, North Carolina 5/5/49 and raised in Holly Ridge, North Carolina by Gerald and Rachel Hines. He died unexpectedly on 9/4/19. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jayne Girolami Hines, who loved him dearly, his brother Greg Hines (Cheryl), his son, David Nowlin Hines, daughter in law, Becky Hines, stepson, Joel Langemaat(Tara), stepdaughter, Andrea Nichols(Patrick), and six grandchildren, who adored their Grandaddy; Quinn, Graham, Landon, Ava, Sophia and Gerrit, who he cherished.
He earned an Undergrad degree from Campbell College, and Master degrees from Duke University and Indiana University SE. He continued to take courses the rest of his life, particularly after he retired, never wanting to miss an opportunity to learn.
He had a thirst and love of travel, which lead him all over the world. He sought out new experiences, whether it be walking amongst the Monarch butterflies as they migrated to the mountains of Michoacan, Mexico; swimming in a bio luminous bay in Puerto Rico; or learning and singing the music of Gilbert and Sullivan. All along the way, he made friends with people and cultures that enriched his life and the lives of those he met.
He loved the Arts and was an active volunteer at the Kentucky Center for the Arts since 1984. He also volunteered for more than 10 years at the Louisville Airport, where he helped other travelers find their way. He shared his love of history and architecture by developing and giving walking tours of Louisville. He was a strong advocate for those less fortunate and those affected by human trafficking. Gary will be sorely missed by all who met him and grew to love his intellect, humor, and compassion.
He never wanted to be given presents on his birthday or Christmas, but rather asked that a charitable donation be made on his behalf. Therefore, please in lieu of flowers, make a donation to a mental health organization, or to that needy person you know or meet, or a favorite charity that you value in his honor. This is what Gary would have wanted and how we can continue his spirit and legacy.
Memorial Visitation will be Monday September 9th from 5-8 PM at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. His Memorial Service will be Tuesday 1:30 PM September 10th at Harvey Browne Memorial Presbyterian Church, 311 Browns LN, Louisville, KY 40207.
