Obituary for Geraldine Paxton, M.D.

D. Geraldine Paxton, MD, 90, passed away on June 8, 2019. She was born on July 5, 1928 in Clarksburg, West Virginia to Ihla Collins and Stewart C. Paxton. Dr. Paxton graduated from Shawnee High School, University of Louisville College of Arts and Sciences, and the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1953. She married her fellow classmate, Ferrell C Lowrey, Jr., MD in 1954. She subsequently completed a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital in Louisville. From 1959-1960, she was the Director of Communicable Disease Control for Louisville/Jefferson County Health Department. She then began her private practice in pediatrics, serving the Jeffersontown area for 50+ years. She served on numerous hospital committees. As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, she enjoyed being a preceptor for medical students, nurse practitioner students, and medical assistants who would rotate through her office.
Dr. Paxton enjoyed many interests. For many years, she was an avid ice skater and was a member of the “Moms on Ice” competitive drill team at Gardiner Lane Ice Skating Rink. This led to an appearance on the “To Tell The Truth” game show in the 1970’s. She participated on a hot air balloon chase team for awhile. And she loved flower gardening. In her later years, she enjoyed times spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years. Dr. Ferrell C. Lowrey, Jr. MD, and her grandson Paxton Lee Lowrey. She is survived by her children, Ferrell C. “Bo” Lowrey, III (Kathryn); Gerlinda L. Lowrey; Liana L. Lowrey; Lauren Lowrey (Renee); grandchildren, Christopher L. Pearson; Galen F. Lowrey; Rosalyn R. Churchman; and Ihla M. Lowrey; and great-granddaughter Presley Jo Pearson.
Dr. Paxton’s family will always remember her endless energy, her dedication to her patients, her unwavering loyalty to friends, her generosity to all, and her unconditional love for her family. She will be so missed.
Visitation will be Monday June 17th from 3-7pm at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Funeral Service will be 1 pm Tuesday at the Funeral Home.
