James Earl Whitworth, Jr., 76, a lifelong educator and resident of Louisville, KY, died on May 28th, 2021, after a brief illness.
Jim was born on December 8, 1944 to Beatrice and James Earl “Pat” Whitworth, Sr. in Louisville, KY. He graduated from Durrett High School in 1962, Western Kentucky University in 1968, and earned a masters degree and Rank 1 in education.
He taught social studies for Jefferson County Public Schools for 29 years, and continued his career at Christian Academy of Louisville until his retirement in 2007. He also served as the principal of Adult Education at Moore High School for many years.
He served two years in the United States Army, including a one-year deployment to Vietnam.
Jim was a member of Southeast Christian Church for 50 years, serving as an elder, singing in the Men's Quartet, and teaching Sunday school classes.
Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn Ropke Whitworth; sons, Matthew Whitworth (Jessica Goldstein) and Daniel Whitworth (Sarah); grandchildren, Simon and Lucy Whitworth; and sister, Barbara Whitworth. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 1, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd., Louisville, KY.
His funeral service will be Wednesday, June 2, 11:00 a.m., at Southeast Christian Church Chapel in the Woods on Moser Road, with visitation prior, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Floydsburg Cemetery in Crestwood, KY.
Jim loved serving the Lord, and is at home and peace in the loving arms of Jesus.
