Obituary for Jim "Pop" Malone

Jim "Pop" Malone, 78, passed away peacefully July 10, 2022. He was born Jan. 1, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Rose and Frank Malone. He was the oldest of 10 children and raised in New Jersey. Jim was preceded in death by his loving sister, Anne Virginia Malone.

Jim moved to Louisville where he attended and graduated from Bellarmine College. He married and remained in Louisville where he would begin a career in sales with Borden Chemical, later National Starch and Chemical, where he retired.

Pop became active in the Buechel Fern Creek Jaycees, where he served as President. He was an active leader in the community, beginning with the Jaycees, and would later become the B District Jefferson County Commissioner, when he was elected to 2 terms, serving on fiscal court.

He was appointed to Jefferson County Clerk by Governor Martha Layne Collins, was chairmen of the Child Abuse Authority, and actively involved with Home of the Innocents.

During Pop’s tenure as County Clerk, he strived to make life easier for the people of our community. He was responsible for expanding the office from the central downtown location to branches in the West End, Shively, Middletown, Westport, JTown, and Highview. His priority was on people, so the nickname, "Pop" began with his leadership in the Jaycees.

He was a devoted Catholic, who was a member of St. Brigid Catholic Church in Louisville and St. Coleman Catholic Church in Pompano Beach, Florida, never missing a weekly Mass or holy day of obligation. POP dedicated the last 23 years of his life to Alcoholic Anonymous, speaking and sponsoring many people.

He was a loving father to Tim Malone, Kevin Malone, Shannon Malone King, and Katie Malone; his grandchildren, Carson King and Molly Malone; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Rose Jones; his siblings, Margaret Caverly (Paul), Michael Malone (Lucretia), Mary Lonsdale (James), Thomas Malone (Lynne), Francee Hoffman, Claire Benvenuto (Steve), John Malone (Nina), and Roseanne DelNero. He was a great father, brother, friend, leader, and sponsor, and will be missed by many.

His memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, July 14th, 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY.

His funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM EST on Thursday, July 21st, 2022 at St. Catharine Catholic Church, with burial to follow in Spring Lake, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home of the Innocents.
