Obituary for Jean D. Gardner (Schuermeyer)

Jean Dorothy Gardner (Schuermeyer)
October 1,1923 – June 1, 2018

Gardner, Jean Dorothy (nee Schuermeyer), 94, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018.

Born in Louisville, raised in Germantown, Jean graduated from Louisville Girls High School and remained in close touch with her classmates throughout her life. As a young woman, she worked as a telephone switchboard operator when party lines were the rule and a real person placed your call. Her sisters were her closest friends and family was always at the center of her life. She met her future husband, John, on a blind date and was a stay at home Mom until her nest was emptied. Jean raised her six children, was hands on doing the same for her first grandchild, and then embarked on a second career in retail sales at Stewart’s Department Store. She looked forward to being with her ‘work family’ each day and loved the independence of earning her own spending money later in life. Raised Methodist, a Catholic convert at marriage, she was a member of Southeast Christian Church.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, John W. Gardner, Sr; father, Harry W. Schuermeyer; mother Florence C. Schuermeyer (Alpiger); brothers Harry and Charles; sisters Marian Stilz, Nina Panke, Martha Minogue; and her grandson James “Will” Gardner.

Her survivors include her sister, Betty J. Trousdale; her children, John W. Gardner Jr. (Sandy), Janet Mullins Grissom (Tom), Jeffrey W. Gardner (JoAnn), James H. Gardner (Anne), Joseph B. Gardner (Pat) and Judith G. Hildebran (Clint). She leaves behind twelve grandchildren, Shannon Mullins Dubke (Mike), Sam Gardner (Natalie), Carly Gardner, Chris Pearl, Jacob Gardner (Kate), Melanie Gardner (Esteban), Jamie Payton (Dan), Stephanie Ernst (Matt), Jeffrey Gardner, Jr., Jesse Grissom (Kelly), Mary Grissom (Joost), Lisa Knable; and great-grandchildren, Harry Dubke, Sam Dubke, Christian Payton, Clarissa Payton, Leighton Ernst, Gavin Stupicic, Deacon Gardner, Zachary Pearl, Keightley Pearl, Max Gardner, Louise Gardner, Ryder Grissom, Layla Grissom, Ella Mae Rosenbaum, Jessa Brown Rosenbaum, Jordan Knable, Ashlee Knable and Shelby Knable.

Her family will celebrate her life in a private service. In lieu of flowers, it was her wish that donations be made to the Will Gardner Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Edmonton State Bank, 909 West Main Street, Glasgow, Kentucky 42141.
