Obituary for John Leonard Brecht

John passed on to his eternal home on August 3, 2018, at the age of 78 in the company of his beloved wife Geraldine and his three children, Lara, Christa, and John after bravely battling prostate cancer for over 13 years.

John was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 3, 1939 to Lloyd and Mary Brecht. He graduated from Austin Catholic Prep School where he lettered in basketball and baseball. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Villanova University with a BA in Liberal Arts. Later he received an MA from Villanova in Classical Languages, Later still, he received an MSIR from Loyola University in Chicago. While in college, John joined the Augustinian Order and was ordained a priest after studying philosophy and theology. He left the priesthood after a little over a year of service and entered the world of business with Continental Bank in Chicago. There he began a management career in Information Technology that culminated in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he managed technology and bank operations for First of America Bank Corporation. When that bank was acquired, he moved to Louisville where he managed IT for National Processing Company for several years before heading up a Project Management group for Equiserve in Boston until retirement.

John loved his family, his friends, his church, and sports, especially the game of golf. He and Geraldine spent many days travelling to Michigan and Illinois to visit family or entertaining them in Louisville. He was a member of the Audubon Country Club for 17 years and enjoyed many a round with the members there. He was also a member of the NPC golf league at Seneca. He was especially loyal to his high school classmates, His Augustinian brothers, and his Louisville friends. John served the Holy Family Parish as a reader, gift bearer, and a committee member.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Father David Brecht, OSA.

He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Geraldine Brecht; daughters, Lara Jones (Dan), and Christa Brecht; son, John Joseph Brecht; granddaughter, Delaney Jones; grandsons, Collin and Justin Jones; brothers, Dr. Paul Brecht, Thomas Brecht, Mark Brecht, and Gregory Brecht; sister, Ann Stock, and many nieces and nephews in particular Lucas and Jaxson Wehrle, with whom he had a special bond.

Visitation for John will be held from 2:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday, August 6 and from 11:00am to 8:00pm on Tuesday August 7 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.

John’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am on Wednesday, August 8, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 3926 Poplar Level Rd. with burial in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society or to the Midwest Augustinians.
