Obituary for John Brennan Mullaney

John Brennan Mullaney Jr. 86, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, with his family by his side.

Brennan was born on July 19, 1934, in Louisville, KY, the son of the late John Brennan Mullaney and Mary Ruth Hayden Mullaney.

Brennan graduated from Saint Xavier High School, class of 1952, and Bellarmine University. He received his Master’s degree in psychiatric social work from the Kent School of Social Work from the University of Louisville in 1964.

He served as executive or associate director at three Catholic Charities agencies, founded and directed a counseling center, and also directed a nationally recognized state-level child advocacy program, all based on the love principles that evolved into the book he authored, AUTHENTIC LOVE, THEORY AND THERAPY (2008).

Brennan had a natural gift of connecting with people. During his 40 year career, he counseled thousands of people, and helped heal them when they were most broken.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Peter Mullaney. He also leaves four grandchildren to cherish his memory, John Brennan Mullaney IV, Erin Mullaney, Landon Mullaney and Ryan Mullaney.

Brennan is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joyce Mullaney; his three children, John Brennan Mullaney III ( Michelle), Dan Mullaney ( Rashawna) and Laurie Mullaney Fox ( Chad); and his brother, Michael Mullaney.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 2131 Lancashire Avenue, Louisville, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., June 28th, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville.

Should friends desire, contributions may be sent in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
