Obituary for Jonathan O. "Jon" Topy

Jonathan Orlando Topy, 77, died Saturday, May 1st, 2021, near his beloved farm in Shelby County.

Jon will be remembered for his unforgettable trombone playing, jazz style and sound, his quiet good nature, and wonderful sense of humor.

He was predeceased by his parents, Fess and Thelma Topy, and a brother, David Topy.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra; two sons, Kenneth Hoskins of Nashville, Tennessee, and Nathan Hoskins (Diana) of Helotes, Texas; and three grandchildren, Degife and Leo Hoskins, and Frederick Hoskins.

Jon graduated from Du Pont Manual High School and attended University of Louisville School of Music. A 55 year member of the American Federation of Musicians, his professional career included service with the Louisville Orchestra and the Kentucky Arts Brass Quintet.

He was the last surviving founding member of the Rascals of Ragtyme, a popular Dixieland band, and was a founding member of the Commonwealth Brass Band. He was a regular player with the Broadway Series and other concert venues, as well as the house band at Derby Dinner Playhouse.

He also played in the Crusade for Children orchestra for more than 25 years. Most recently he was a member of the Walnut Street Ramblers, playing several years at the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville.

Jon’s fondest love after family and pets was his farm in Shelby County where he and his wife raised Angora goats and sheep and sold berries, asparagus, and vegetables at local farmer’s markets.

A visitation and a celebration of Jon’s life will be held Wednesday, May 12th, 2021, 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Kentucky, 40205.

Cremation was chosen, and a private graveside service and interment will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery.
