Obituary for Juanita Ann Powell

Juanita Ann Powell, 92 of Roanoke, Alabama, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2022, at Inniswood Village in Westerville, Ohio, where she resided for the past 20 months.

Juanita was born December 8, 1929, and was the daughter of Loie Ann (Robinson) and Henry Cornelius Cato. She was the oldest of six children, graduated Handley High School in 1947 in Roanoke and attended business school in Montgomery, Alabama. While going to business school, Juanita met her husband Clay Boyd Powell, and they were married July 15, 1950, in Columbus, Georgia. Together they raised four children while Clay was in the Air Force, and they lived in Alaska, Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, and Alabama. They also had a home on Christmas Lake in Indiana and ultimately retired in Naples, Florida, while always considering Louisville, Kentucky, as their home.

In Alaska in 1957, Juanita accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and she and Clay raised their children in the church over the years. She worked as the church secretary for Valley View Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, for many years supporting Dr. James E. Jones, current Pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Campbellsville, Kentucky.

Juanita was an independent, honest, and caring woman who lived her life with grace, gratitude, and love for her family and friends. She was witty, always said what was on her mind, and her facial expressions said it all. Juanita was loved by many and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Over the years she enjoyed gardening, genealogy, traveling, playing bridge, redecorating, supporting her community through committee service, spending time with friends, and serving the Lord through membership at First Baptist Church of Roanoke for many years. Juanita loved her family and husband and was loyal to them to the end.

She will be missed by all and now rests in peace knowing that she lived a long, joyous, and Christ-centered life. She often said she had no regrets and was very blessed with a good life. Juanita is now reunited in Heaven with Clay, the love of her life.

Preceding Juanita in death were her parents, her two sisters Ruth Calhoun and Ellene Mitchell, her brothers Farris and Wayne Cato, and her husband Clay. Surviving are her four children, Terry Trissell, Mike Powell, Susan Barnes, and Karen Powell; her brother, Tommy Cato; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
