Obituary for Julia Cella State Crowley

Julia was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1954 to parents Walter Cella and Martha Altermatt Cella. She attended Bishop Hartley High School and earned her BS in Nursing from The Ohio State University in 1976.

After graduation, Julie married David State and moved to Louisville where she began a thirty-eight year nursing career at St Joseph’s Infirmary. When Audubon Hospital opened its doors, she continued her career there until her retirement in 2015.

Julie was an exceptional caregiver whose work was an important part of who she was as a person. The values instilled in her by her parents and her Catholic faith guided her actions in life and made her a wise and kind mentor to others.

Julie passed away on April 26, 2021 in Hospice care at Norton Audubon Hospital, where she was provided the same kind and loving care she gave to so many for so many years. The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Audubon Hospital who shared their love and compassion with her during her final days.

She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Cella; and husband, David State.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis Crowley; her mother, Martha Cella of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and three siblings, Christopher Cella (Kathleen) of Johnstown, Ohio, Stephen Cella (Rebecca) of Columbus, Ohio, and Susan Triplett (Kurt) of Dublin, Ohio.

She is also survived by her children, Maegan Princing (Dale), Matthew Crowley, and Nicholas Crowley; nieces and nephews, Lindsey Triplett Goodman (Scott), Drew Triplett (Jill), Katie Cella Coan (Kyle), Nicole Cella, Lilly Hoffman; and goddaughter, Renee Rodgers (Lonnie), as well as many other members of the State family.

Dennis and Julie met on a group hike in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge and enjoyed many hiking vacations together throughout the U.S. and Europe. Julie loved nature and animals, especially dogs. She will be missed by her black lab, Teddy. Family and coworkers enjoyed her cookies at Christmas time or any other time she was inspired to bake for them.

It seemed that Julie had the genes for longevity and the personal care habits to support that, yet she has been called home much earlier than anyone expected. She will be missed by so many whose lives she touched with her love and kindness.

Julie's funeral service will be at 11:00am on Monday, May 3rd, 2021, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd, Louisville, KY, 40205, with interment to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, May 2nd, from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
