Obituary for Llewellyn Powell Gordon

GORDON, LLEWELLYN “WHITEY” P O W E L L , 99, left this earthly realm November 9, 2010. He was born September 16, 1911 in the Auburndale/ Kenwood neighborhood of Louisville, as the last child of eight to the late Emma K. and Fred Gordon. He was married to his beloved wife, Mary Louise Johnson Gordon and they celebrated almost 50 years of marriage before her death in 1987. He was also preceded in death by his gentle son, Llewellyn Gerald “Jerry” Gordon; and seven siblings, Dora “Dorie,” Fred “Mox,” Edgar, Herbert, John “Taylor,” Gustava and Arthur “Bunt.” Whitey proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, aboard the U.S.S. Lawrence C. Taylor in the South Pacific, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. His tales of his pride for serving his country, the friends he met from across the country, things he saw in the murky waters of the South Pacific and “Inky,” the dog he and his fellow seamen cared for aboard the ship, always came through as good times in his life. He was also a lifetime member of the former Robert E. Newman VFW Post #3636. Whitey was an avid Cincinnati Reds baseball fan and was a player for local leagues for over 20 years. In the 1940s and 1950s, he was a pitcher for various teams, playing in leagues at Simm’s Corner, Turner, Beechmont (Joker Joe’s), R.C. Tavern and other locations. His stories of upsetting certain teams always brought a sly smile to his face. For almost 40 years, Whitey worked as a pressman for Fawcett Haynes Printing Company (C.T. Dearing, Fawcett, etc.) until his retirement in the 1970s. He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Maloney Constantine (James) and Suzanne M. Fuchs (Frederick); seven grandchildren, Charlotte Mason (Mike), Craig, Cheryl and Charles “Chuck” Maloney, Christina “Nina” Adams (David), Lauren Griggs (Ryann) and Richard Fuchs; three great-grandchildren, Christopher and Chelsey Sims and Zachary Adams; and two great-great-grandchildren, Logan Sims and Kane Rosser. The family wishes to recognize the caring “family” Grandpa grew to know at the Golden Living Center of St. Matthews, where he resided the last 4 1/2 years. Prior to that he lived in Hikes Point for over 50 years and had many neighbors he fondly remembered. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville, Road, with burial to follow in Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation: 1-8 p.m. Thursday and 9-11 a.m. Friday. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
