Obituary for Lorraine Kaufman (Burgher)

Lorraine Kaufman (Burgher)
Lorraine Burgher (formerly, Ervin) Kaufman

passed peacefully into God’s kingdom on April 22, 2018. She lived an exemplary Christian life. Lorraine was born in Cynthiana, Kentucky, to Edmon and Ethel Johnson Burgher on February 21, 1929. She was raised in Clay City, Kentucky, under the influential religious spirit of her mother. Lorraine attended Georgetown College for a short time where she met her first husband, Max Ervin, M.D. Supporting him first through dental school and then medical school, Lorraine and Max had four children, Max, Jr., Stan, Peter and Nancy. During those years, Lorraine was the do everything mother, wife and homemaker. Service to Christ and raising a family of believers was always paramount. Lorraine was an active charter member of Hurstbourne Baptist Church. After Lorraine suffered the tragic loss of her husband Max in 1970, God led her to a second and great love with Rev. William L. Kaufman. Both widowed, Lorraine and Bill nourished one another’s souls for 31 happy years of marriage. With her children grown, and Bill a minister, Lorraine’s spirit flourished. She enjoyed the role of a pastor’s wife. Lorraine was a leader in the Woman’s Missionary Union, Home Missions, DAR and taught English to foreign nationals through Friendship International. Lorraine was wonderfully compassionate with a desire to share the good news of Christ’s love to all.

In addition to her parents, Lorraine is preceded in death by husbands Max Ervin, M.D. and Rev. William L. Kaufman, brothers Benjamin and Edmon, Jr., sons Max Ervin, Jr. and Everett Kaufman, and grandsons Max McCall and John Massey McCall.

She is survived by sons Stan and Peter (Cathy), daughters Nancy (Jay) Breslin and Sue Claycomb, many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville.
