Obituary for Margaret "Peggy" Schmidt

Margaret “Peg” Schmidt passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, December 17, 2023. Known lovingly as “Mimi” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Peg was 96 years old and still a force of nature.

Born March 21, 1927 in Louisville, she was the only daughter of Ed and Margaret Schweizer but grew to be the matriarch of four generations of the family she built with her husband Gene “Dutch” Schmidt before he passed in 2006. Quick to laugh and always up for a highball, Peg loved Saturday nights and a good game of cards. She was the life of the party without trying, never met a stranger and had a quick wit that endeared her to all. She and Dutch spent 58 beautiful years together raising their family, running the Gene Schmidt Company, having a blast with countless lifelong friends, and traveling the world. The love of their life, after their family, was travel. As faithful as she was fun, Peg was a devoted wife and the best of mothers.

Her children and grandchildren adored her and will miss her deeply but carry on her vivacious spirit because as she liked to say, we’re all only here because of her! She was a devout Catholic and lifelong member of St. Stephen Martyr, and her family takes great comfort knowing she is now with Jesus, her husband and the countless friends and family who have gone before her. Peg was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Schmidt. She is survived by her children, Marty (Jeanne) Schmidt, Sherry (Harold) Cook and Peggy (Tony) Swindall, nine grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 28th from 9:30-11:00am at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville road. Funeral Mass will take place on the same day at 12 p.m. at St. Stephen Martyr, 2931 Pindell Ave Louisville, Ky. and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Vincent de Paul. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
