Obituary for Martin Joseph Schnurr

Martin Joseph Schnurr, Jr, 76, of Louisville, KY passed peacefully to his Heavenly Father on November 28th, 2020, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born on January 23rd, 1944, to Martin J. Schnurr, Sr. and Marian Springston Schnurr, he was a proud 1961 graduate of Saint Xavier High School and obtained his degree in chemistry from Bellarmine University in 1965.
He was a lifelong salesman, ultimately retiring from the Board of Directors at Palmer Holland after a successful 43-year career. More than that, “Big” Marty was a modern-day Renaissance man. Among his many roles, he was a volunteer at Ascension Catholic Church, a knowledgeable horseman, and a zealous Cardinals fan. Most of all he was a loving husband, a great Dad, a dependable brother, a loyal friend to so many, and the best Papa in the world. God shined his light through Marty by the way he lived and treated others. He loved creating opportunities to bring his friends and family together to experience life his way alongside him. This talent took many forms: joyful outings to Churchill Downs, hosting out-of-town guests for Derby week festivities, road trips to cheer on the Cards, family vacations to Destin, golf trips with his buddies, and going to The Masters at Augusta National, just to name a few.

He never missed a chance to take in a good sunset, whether it be on his deck with his wife and family, or at the beach with a margarita in his hand and his feet in the sand. Regaling others with a good story was a great joy for him and a treat for the lucky listeners. He was thoroughly incapable of telling the short version despite playful pleadings from his wife who’d “heard ‘em all” countless times.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Rene’ Holmes Schnurr; sons Martin J. III (Andrea) and Kenneth L. (Mandy) Schnurr; grandchildren Eleanor, Martin J. IV, Mia, and Macy; siblings Gerald Schnurr (Patty), Karen Benz (Dick), and Janet Myers (Tim). He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Mary Pat Thompson.

Because of the current restrictions, a private visitation and service will be held on Monday, December 7th at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorville Rd. A larger celebration of his life for his beloved friends and extended family is in the works.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nativity Academy at St. Boniface, 529 East Liberty St., 40202. Also, if you’re able to do so, making a blood donation to your local American Red Cross would have a special meaning.
