Obituary for Mary O. Stokes (Oney)

Mary Rebecca Oney Stokes, was born July 30, 1919, to Creed and Mattie Oney in Hazard Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Leslie; her three older brothers, Herbert, JB, and Fred Oney; and her first born son, David.

She is survived by her children, John (Gini) Stokes of Louisville, Sarah (Tom) Schriner of Columbus,
Ohio, and Marti (Jeff) Buechlein of Louisville; grandchildren, Leslie (Rachel) Small-Stokes, Amy
(Blake) Levine, Meredith Scott, Lindsay Brown Stokes, Kyle Schriner (Erin Prosser), Colin (Krista)
Schriner, Alex, Shelby and Jack Buechlein; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary grew up in eastern Kentucky, daughter of a storeowner for the local coal company. When the
collapse of 1929 happened, the family lost everything and moved to Carrollton, Kentucky.

She went to college at Eastern Kentucky University, majoring in home economics. She met her future husband
working in Charleston, Indiana; they were married in Nevada, where they while Les finished his
commitment to the U.S. Navy. They settled in Louisville, living in three homes within 60 years.

Mary was an active member at St. Matthews Methodist Church, involved in women's circles, ST. MAM, and cooking church dinners. She was also a member of the Rock Creek Garden Club, and enjoyed reading, traveling, playing bridge, and gardening.

A private service will be held in her honor.
