Obituary for Michael Joseph Whelan

On 11-23-2024 Mike Whelan, Sr., loving husband, father of three and grandfather of four, passed away after his short battle with cancer at the age of 85.

Mike was born 1 of 13 children on July 8, 1938 in Louisville, KY to Bernie and Ruth (Mills) Whelan. He attended Holy Name and Flaherty grade schools and St Xavier High School before transferring into Ahrens Trade School to pursue a career as an electrician. After a short stint as a US Army National Guard soldier, he joined the Louisville IBEW LU 369 in 1959 and spent the majority of his career running construction projects at the Ford Kentucky Truck Plant until his retirement at 62.

He met his lifelong love, Norma Fischer, in 1962 and they were married exactly one year later to the day. God blessed them with two daughters, Kris Finn (Bill) and Suzanne; one son, Mike Jr.; and four grandsons. He is survived by three sisters, Ruth-Ann Bandy (Bruce), Bernice Lee (Dickie), and Bonnie Hulak.

Visitation will be held 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Monday, November 27th at Highland Funeral Home 3331 Taylorsville Road, in Louisville.

His funeral Mass will be at 11:00am on Tuesday, November 28th, at Ascension Catholic Church, 4600 Lynnbrook Drive.
