Obituary for Mickey Dones

Mickey O’Bryan Dones passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 16th, 2022. She was 77 years old.

A lifelong Louisvillian, Mickey was known and loved by all who were lucky enough to cross her path. Whether a family member, lifelong friend, clerk at one of her many favorite stores, or someone she had never met before, Mickey treated everyone with love and kindness. She found immense joy in being surrounded by others; cuddling and kissing her grandchildren; volunteering in the coffee room at St. John’s Center; noticing the beauty of nature; and bringing smiles to people’s faces.

Mickey had a gift of making everyone she met feel special and loved like they were her most favorite person in the entire world.

Mickey was preceded in death by her parents, Agnes (Stauble) and Joseph Guy O’Bryan; sisters, Doris O’Bryan, Patricia Kerton, and Virginia ‘Babe’ Rose; and dear friends, Ellen Nord, Martha Nord, and Ava Meagher.

Left to honor her memory are Mickey’s husband, Rudy; her sister, Betty Straub; her children, Derrick (Miranda) Dones, Dawn Dones, and Jody (Scott) Spencer; her grandchildren, Miles & Marley Dones; very special nieces, Cyndi Kerton & Shawn Banks; lifelong friends, “The Girls” Susie Wills, Patty Birchler, Betty Deerwester, Miriam Gravatte, Judy Landis, Carol Schmitt, & Ellyn Steinemann; and countless beloved family, friends, and neighbors.

Mickey’s family would like to thank everyone who called, visited, sent cards, baked treats, shared stories, played music, held her hand, watched the squirrels, brought flowers, and enhanced the quality of Mom’s life. A special thanks to Betsy, Cheri, and Leanna from Hosparus and Nick Chan.

You are invited to join in the Celebration of Mickey’s Life on Friday, October 28th from 2-8 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home (3331 Taylorsville Rd.); and on Saturday, October 29th at 10 a.m. at St. William Catholic Church (1226 W. Oak St.), with burial immediately following at St. Michael Cemetery (1300 Ellison Ave.).

To really honor Mickey, even though she loved them, in lieu of flowers, please be kind -- send a card to a friend to brighten their day (fill it with confetti to really make an impact), drop a treat by to someone’s house unexpectedly, offer gratitude to those who make your life easier (sanitation workers, store clerks, the mail carrier, folks in the deli, etc.), give generously to those who are less fortunate than you, smile at strangers, appreciate the beauty of life, leave something better than you found it, and/or make a donation to St. John Center or Presentation Academy.
