Obituary for Mildred Wheeler Bailey

Mildred Bailey, age 96, was greeted in heaven by family and friends on October 7, 2022. She lived the last two years of her life in a nursing home, but her fervent prayer was that she would be able to return to her patio home at Swan Pointe. Her heavenly Father had a better plan for her and prepared the perfect home for her in heaven, where she is now reunited with her husband, John Bailey, her parents, Floyd and Mayme Wheeler, her brothers, Charles Wheeler and Bob Wheeler, her sister-in-law, Doris Wheeler, and her nephew, Tom Wheeler.

Mildred was born March 12, 1926, in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended Louisville Girls High School and graduated with the class of 1944. She worked at Standard Oil Company where she met her husband-to-be. They married on April 14, 1956, and welcomed three children over the next eight years. Mildred enjoyed being a wife and mother, keeping an immaculate home and cooking delicious meals for the family. She was always active in her church, teaching Sunday school and participating in women’s groups and Bible studies. After her husband’s untimely death in 1988, Mildred found great comfort in The Next Chapter, a widow’s group at Southeast Christian Church, where she served as president for several years. She also spent many years serving with pastoral care by visiting Southeast Christian Church members who were in nursing homes. She enjoyed many relaxing hours cross-stitching and using her creativity to make greeting cards. Her six grandchildren brought her much joy and she was thrilled with her recent role as great-grandmother.

Mildred is survived by her three children, Ann Bailey Smith (Leo), Greg Bailey, and Joan Brown (Bill), by her six grandchildren, Patrick Smith (Lauren), Megan Doyle (Tyler), Abigail Bishop (Ross), Leah Forrest (Conner), Connor Smith (Jenn), and Micah Brown, and her four great-grandchildren, Hazel Smith, Brandon Bishop, Vera Forrest, and Josephine Smith. She was looking forward to the birth of her fifth great-grandchild, Everett Doyle, next month. She is also survived by her nephew, Bill Wheeler (Jackie). Her family will miss her love, support, and encouraging words but are thankful for a life well-lived. Mildred’s family is grateful for her wonderful neighbors at Swan Pointe, especially Newell and Susie Carter and Peg Snider as well as for the care she received at The Springs at Stony Brook.

Visitation will be on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. Her funeral will be at the funeral home on Friday, October 14, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will be held at a later date.
