Obituary for Nancy Jean Price (Farmer)

Nancy Farmer Price passed away on March 2, 2023, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a native of Princeton, Caldwell County, Kentucky. She came into this world on New Year’s Day, 1933, and thereafter was usually first in everything she did. Born during the Great Depression and the last of six children, her parents struggled in their rural farming community to make ends meet.

Coming of age in those difficult times, she admired President Roosevelt for energetically trying to improve people’s lives and became a devoted member of the Democratic Party. She attended Murray State University but left prior to graduating in 1952 to wed the love of her life, Harold Price, who survives her. They were married for over 70 years.

Harold’s career in the newspaper business took them to Vincennes and Bedford in southern Indiana, where their first child Robert was born. It then took them to Pikeville and Owensboro, and during those moves their second child Gene came along. They then came to Louisville, where they resided for all but six of her remaining 64 years.

Nancy loved to laugh, entertain, and make people feel welcome. She was significantly influenced by her passionate Christian faith and disciplined, principled beliefs, both fed by her insatiable desire for books and the insights they held. Being a mother, grandmother, and pianist were the great joys of her life, along with “doggie wogs” too. She played piano for several Baptist churches throughout the state and continued playing into her 90’s, offering piano lessons to children wherever she lived. The legacy of her piano teaching can still be found in adults of all ages across Louisville, many of whom kept up with her in person or on social media.

Nancy and Harold later both enrolled at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where she earned a Diploma in Divinity, with an emphasis in Pastoral Care. After graduation Harold served in several area churches and in Augusta, Georgia, and Nancy became the Chaplain at University Hospital. Her work was so highly regarded that some patients and their families stayed in contact with her for years afterward. Returning to Louisville, she resumed teaching piano but focused on her seven grandchildren. Many a night was spent at “Granzie and Hooties” house, where Granzie made sure there were ample stories, music, food, and laughter. Nancy was preceded in passing by her parents, Otie Grace McChesney Farmer and Euen Farmer, and granddaughter Breanna Mackenzie Price. She is survived by sons Robert (Renee) and Gene (Diane) of Louisville, her grandchildren Erin Thomas (Alex), Megan Holyfield (Patrick), Addison Price (Taylor), and Garrett Price of Louisville, and Vanessa Price (Zac) and Forrest Price of New York, as well as five great-grandchildren. Her siblings, James, Joseph, Joyce Wilson, Mary Nelle Adams, and Sue Carter each preceded her passing. She wanted her life to be full, and it was. We miss her dearly.

Visitation will be at Highlands Funeral Home on Taylorsville Road from 2:00 to 7:00 on Tuesday March 7th, with a funeral at St. Matthews Baptist Church on March 8th at 11:00.
