Obituary for Nell Ruth Graham (Carney)

December 3, 2022 saw the party lights dim a bit lower with the loss of Nell C. Graham who was known for frequently throwing a good one for her family and friends. If there wasn’t an occasion, she could always find a reason to crank up the stove and call up the usuals. Nell was well known for her famous biscuits and delicious chess pie which she frequently graced upon friends as well as members of her beloved church, St Mark United Methodist, where she was a member for over 60 years. When she wasn’t throwing a party, Nell was an avid and skilled bridge player.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee to Vernon and Mary Carney on July 29, 1928, Nell would marry her soulmate, Kenneth P Graham (deceased 2018) in 1948 and move to Louisville, which would be their home for the next 74 years. During her time here, Nell was a founding member of St Mark United Methodist Church and a charter member of P.E.O. Chapter L. In recognition of her 60 years as a leader and a member of this organization, a scholarship was founded in her honor.

Nell leaves behind her loving daughter, Patricia Palmer and her husband, Brad Palmer; son, Paul Graham (Celia); grandson, Dr. Eliot J. Graham (Meera); granddaughter, McKenna Graham (Andrew Cozzens); and great-granddaughter, Iris Cozzens. She also leaves a brother, the Reverend Jack V. Carney; and many nieces and nephews in Tennessee.

There will be a visitation from 12:00 until 2:00 followed immediately by a memorial service will be held December 7th at St Mark United Methodist Church, 4611 Lowe Road, Louisville, Ky. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to P.E.O. Foundation, Kentucky Chapter L, Nell Graham Scholarship Fund, 3700 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA 50312, or the charity of your choice.
