Obituary for Paul Duke Carlisle, Jr.

Paul Duke Carlisle, Jr., 92, passed on June 4, 2018. Born on September 17, 1925, he was the son of Lt. Col. Paul Duke Carlisle and Frances Wathen.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Rita App Carlisle, and a son, Curtis William Carlisle.

Duke is survived by his children Paul D. Carlisle, III (Gretchen) and Cyndy Carlisle Bowman (Keith); grandchildren Lauren Carlisle, Chris Carlisle, Jacquelyn Bowman O’Brien (Matt) and David Bowman (Sara); and great-grandchildren Collins O’Brien, Beckett O’Brien and Ellie Bowman.

Duke graduated from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Bardstown in 1944, and joined the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a tail-gunner on a B-24 bomber stationed in the South Pacific, where he served with distinction and was awarded the Air Medal.

He was a charter member of St. Raphael Catholic Church. Besides his church activities, Duke was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sons of the American Revolution, the Bonnycastle Club, the American Legion Post 201 and the 307th Air Force Association. He spent his work career with Aluminum Cruisers, Inc. where he was a founding employee.

Along with his immediate family he will be missed by lifelong friends, especially the survivors of the Pinochle Club and their families.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the excellent staff of Symphony at Oaklawn and Hosparus of Louisville for their compassionate care of Duke.

His funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018 at St. Raphael the Archangel, Bardstown Rd. and Lancashire Ave. with burial in St. Louis Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or for Mass intentions at St. Raphael.
