Obituary for Pauletta Matthews (Perkins)

Pauletta Perkins Matthews, age 77, slipped away peacefully and went home to be with our Lord on June 4 after a long illness. This loving and joyful person lived life to the fullest and made the lives of others more complete by her giving presence. All who knew her loved being around her and laughing with her. Her laughter was contagious and her giving nature a blessing to all.

The daughter of a United Methodist preacher, she moved around the state with her family and attended multiple schools. Her high school years were at Waggener High School in Louisville, Kentucky. Pauletta was a graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College (Kappa Delta) and Western Kentucky University. She was a business teacher at Shawnee and Manual High Schools in the Jefferson County Public Schools and worked after her retirement conducting evaluations for ECE students. She also taught business classes at Ahrens Night High School and Jefferson Community College. Pauletta loved teaching and positively affecting the lives of her students.

As a lifelong member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Pauletta worked to support many facets of church ministry. She taught mid-high Sunday School with her husband for 15 years, worked in a number of roles for the annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival, and was one of three ladies that created the many banners now used in St. Paul worship services. Her heart for service extended to the Salvation Army where she helped as a red kettle worker and with packing family gift baskets at the main facility.

Pauletta loved playing the dulcimer and piano, gardening, tennis, and traveling with her family and friends. Her greatest joy, however, was being a mother and grandmother (Nana). She was a volleyball mom, Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and organizer and host of many family gatherings.

Pauletta is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Brad Matthews; daughter, Sarah Ruth Squier (Richard); a sister, Nelda Mohr (Donnell); brother, John Perkins; granddaughters, Riley and Regan Squier; and a number of nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father, Rev. Dr. Rual T. Perkins; mother, Juanita Conn Perkins; and a sister, Florence Perkins Greathouse.

Visitation will be held at Highlands Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 8, from 2:00-700 PM EDT. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 9, at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM EST. Expressions of remembrance can be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church or the Louisville Alzheimer’s Association.
