Obituary for Peter Leo Schmidt, Sr.

Peter Leo Schmidt, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully in the company of his family at his home on Friday July 1, 2022. A lifelong resident of Louisville, he was a member of the Honorable Order of the Kentucky Colonels and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Pete was born on April 18, 1934, the first of six children, and was a 1952 graduate of Flaget High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy as a Construction Mechanic serving in the Naval Construction Force (Seabees). He was stationed with Amphibious Construction Battalion ONE with tours of duty at Kwajalein Atoll and Yokosuka, Japan.

He worked for both Canada Dry and Pepsi as a merchandising specialist, retiring in 1997. Throughout his adult life, Pete was an active member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Parish, serving as a volunteer coach, concession stand manager, and Minister of the Eucharist. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking, and visiting with friends and family, especially his grandchildren.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford John and Leona Gerstle Schmidt, and his sister, Rita Jane Schmidt. Pete is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Werline Schmidt; sisters, Rosie Taylor (Bill), Phyllis Bennett, Carolyn Russell (Jim) and Margie Prys (Paul); children, Peter Jr. (Lisa Ann), Monica Williamson, Lisa Kelly (Sean), Eric (Jennifer); and grandchildren, Oliver, Gabrielle and Alex Williamson, Sean and Emma Kelly and Creighton and Donovan Schmidt.

Visitation will be on Sunday, July 17 from 2:00 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. His funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1406 E. Washington Street. There will be no graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels Good Works Program, Mass of the Air, or to the Kentucky Humane Society in his honor.
