Obituary for Dr. Raymond G. Shea, Jr.

SHEA-Raymond Gerald, Jr. MD “Doc”, a resident of both Kentucky and Indiana, passed away early morning on April 9th, 2022, at 82 years of age. Born March 6th, 1940, in New Rochelle, NY, he was the son of Ann (nee Langan) and Raymond G. Shea, Sr. MD. Raised in New Rochelle, he graduated from Iona Preparatory School. Dr. Shea went on to receive his undergraduate degree in Pre-Medicine from Notre Dame in 1962. He earned his master’s from New York Medical College in 1966 and his doctorate from The University of Michigan in 1972.

He started practicing medicine and surgery in 1974. In 1983, he started Raymond G. Shea, Jr. MD, PSC Group. Within the group were his partners that he had the utmost respect for. Dr. E. Tillett, Dr. A. Malkani, Dr. D. Caborn, Dr. M. Yakkanti, Dr. P. McKee IV, Dr. L. Mast, and Dr. N. Patil. He was certified by The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and was an active member of the AAOS-American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Dr. Shea loved many things starting with his own family history. He was always proud that both of his grandfathers were first responders; one a policeman and one a fireman. He was exceptionally proud of his own father, a doctor, and WWII Veteran (1940-1945). He had a patriotic heart and held military personnel in the highest regard and treated many active duty and veterans from Fort Knox, KY. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Unites States Army in 1974.

Dr. Shea was a very passionate and generous supporter of the University of Louisville Football Program. He was appointed the Team Sports Physician by the late Coach Howard Schnellenberger and held that position for 34 years. He was a thoroughbred owner who dabbled in horseracing as he had a great love and appreciation for horses. He had many pastimes that brought him joy including football, cutting grass, learning, and educating others about world history, listening to music, and vacationing in his two most loved places: New York City and St. Barth’s. Mostly, he loved being “Dr. Shea”. He was really in his arena in the Operating Room, the Football Complex and Churchill Downs. Of all his notable qualities, he was unmatched in his desire and drive to treat any and every patient in need. No matter the hour, if it was a weekend or during vacation, nothing would interfere with his ability to treat patients…..UNLESS it was during a UofL football game! Then he would treat them after of course.

He was preceded in death by parents, his sister Nancy Shea Clark, and brother-in-law Jack Mulcahy. He is survived by the love of his life, Jennifer M. Endris, as well as his children Catherine Shea, Jane Scotti (Chris), Raymond Shea III (Carolyn), Mark Shea (Bailey), stepchildren Ashley Triplett (Todd), Christopher Endris, Elizabeth Leist (Matthew); sister Elizabeth Mulcahy, Michael Shea (Darlene); eight grandchildren; five step grandchildren; many nieces and nephews along with many special friends including Dwayne Treolo, Kyle Johnston, Phil Hestand and EJ Jumper.

Visitation will take place Thursday April 14th at Highlands Funeral Home from 1-5 with a memorial service at 5. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
