Obituary for Sara Marnell Augustus
Sara Marnell Augustus (Smith), 82, of Louisville, died on Thursday October 15 at her home, surrounded by her family. Sara left behind an enduring legacy of nurture, laughter and an abiding joy of life to all who knew her.
Sara is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jim Augustus, 4 children (Jim Augustus, Susan (Erik) Heitmann, Kelly (Jeff) Smith and Mike Augustus), 7 grandchildren (Jessica and Jacob Smith, Brevik, Sydney and Bryce Heitmann, Jack and Alex Augustus), and her sister, Donna Gensheimer. She was preceded in death by her father, Delbert Smith, her mother, Susan Mary Smith (Field), her sister, Dorothy Fothergill and her son-in-law, Erik Heitmann.
Sara graduated from Presentation Academy in 1955 and was a long-time parishioner of St. Raphael. Throughout the 1980s she served as tennis pro at Village Tennis Center. While not cheering at their children’s swim meets and other events, Sara and Jim loved to socialize with their large but tight-knit group of friends. On the first Saturday of each May, they could be found at Churchill Downs having fun and celebrating life. Sara adored her family, and her favorite role may have been as “Mimi” to her grandkids.
Visitation will be at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd, on Wednesday, October 21 from 3-6 p.m. The funeral will be at St. Raphael on Thursday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.
