Obituary

Shirley Wimsett Nitzken "Grammie", passed Tuesday afternoon, January 29, 2019. She was 83 years old.

Shirley is survived by her dear sister, Marilyn Jackson (Leroy) and her three children: Marty Nitzken (Marianne), Gary Nitzken (Laura), and Connie Nitzken Mulcrone (John). Shirley had nine grandchildren: Mollie, Shane, Shelby, Anna, Lillie, Kyle, Martin, Ben, and Samantha.

Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bud Nitzken, mother Thelma, father Richard, and brother, Jack Wimsett.

Shirley’s life was centered around her family, friends, and faith. Shirley was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and a caretaker of the sick, delivering communion to multiple hospitals in the Louisville area. She was a loving friend and enjoyed her card and homemakers clubs, spending many hours creating and laughing. She enjoyed cooking for luncheons at Lourdes and baking her famous cakes for members of her family and friends.

Shirley never met a stranger anywhere she went. She was a loving mother figure to many, not just her family, and will forever be remembered for her selflessness and generosity. Her cheerful spirit and compassion will be truly missed.

Dear Sister Connie and the ENTIRE, very far-reaching Nitzken families,
Thinking of ALL of you and sending my sincerest sympathy and prayers to all.
I am so sorry for your big loss of Shirley, mom, Grammie, sister, Aunt, and just good 'ol "Shirl." Shirley was quite a gal. While I realize that I have only known her for a fraction of the time you all have been blessed by her, from the first time I met Shirley back in my college years, I knew she was a very special lady! She opened her home to we crazy college girls like she had known us forever...and what a hostess she was! She always made sure we had enough food and snacks and sweets; especially her famous chicken salad....it was the BEST! And I make her banana bread (with the "secret ingredient") at least twice a month. Shirley was such a fun and super sweet lady and we've had some really fun times over the last 30 years. She and your family are really something special! I feel so lucky to have spent time with such a wonderful woman and her extended family. I have to say, I was always impressed how that lady could have such a good time wherever she went....I swear, no matter what her age, Shirley could always hang with the best of us....even when we were in our younger years. Rock on, Shirley! You will be truly missed by a whole lot of people. I am blessed to have known you, such an amazing women, who raised an incredible family. Connie and family, may the wonderful memories you have of your mom/Shirley, help you through this really trying time...she will be in your heart for always and forever. Much love and deepest sympathy, Lisa Howard (and family)
