POULTER, SHIRLEY ANN BEST, 73, passed on to eternal life with her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, May 30, 2010.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Maurice Poulter; daughters, Sandra Kay Neat (Kris) and Lisa Ann Poulter; granddaughters, Paige Neat, Samantha Neat, and Cameron Hair; a sister, Margaret Fulner; a brother, Donald Best (Bettie); two aunts, Dorothy Casey Reuer (Otto) and Nina Best Franklin; an uncle, James Casey (Georgia); and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A 1954 graduate of Shawnee High School, Shirley was a lifelong learner and teacher. After staying at home to raise her two girls for several years, she went to the University of Louisville to pursue her bachelor's degree in elementary education and eventually received her master's degree.
She was a much-loved teacher and administrator at Christian Academy of Louisville for 28 years, then served as a member of its board of directors. She was instrumental in the early development of Christian Academy and loved the school and its mission with all of her heart. After she retired from CAL, she couldn't stay still for long and began working at Necole's Place to assist single mothers in getting their General Equivalency Diplomas. For the last three years, she also taught classes at Louisville Bible College.
Mrs. Poulter was a member of Southeast Christian Church for 40 years, active in various volunteer capacities in the elementary education department. Prior to that, she was a member of and church secretary for West End Christian Church.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Southeast Christian Church Chapel, 920 Blankenbaker Pkwy., with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road and from 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the church.
Flowers may be sent to the funeral home or contributions may be made in her name to the capital campaign at Christian Academy of Louisville.
