Obituary for Dr. Tom D. Nichol
Dr. Tom D. Nichol, 84, passed away Friday, August 24, 2018. He was born in Donelson, TN. on December 31, 1933, the youngest of 4 sons of Wendel and Elsa Hite Nichol. He grew up on a farm near Nashville, TN.
Tom met his future wife, Anne Blankenhorn, at West End High School in Nashville, TN. and they were married June 16, 1956, and were married for over 62 years.
Tom attended Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee prior to graduating from the University of Tennessee Dental College in 1957 and the University of Tennessee Medical College in 1963. His wife Anne received two PHT (Putting Hubby Through) degrees from Memphis TN. schools.
Dr. Nichol received his oral surgery training at the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville, and did a medical internship at Nashville General Hospital and the Vanderbilt University Hospital. He did his general surgery training at the City of Memphis Hospital and plastic surgery training at Duke University in Durham, NC.
Tom served in the Army Dental Corp. for ten years reaching the rank of Captain. Dr. Nichol practiced plastic surgery in Louisville, KY. until 1999.
During his training and practice years, Tom was a member of multiple honorary dental and medical societies. Anne and Tom were active members of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville for over 30 years and participated in numerous mission trips to Jamaica, Cuba and Montana with church groups.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Robert, Harry and William. Survivors include his wife, Anne; son, Tim (Janna); daughter, Wendy; granddaughter, Andi; grandson, Tyler, all of Louisville; sisters-in-law, Joy Nichol and Jeri Tucker, both of Nashville, TN.
Tom loved talking with friends and strangers alike, especially children. He enjoyed eating at restaurants and interacting with the restaurant staff, much to the embarrassment of his family and friends.
His funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Southeast Christian Church, 920 Blankenbaker Pkwy. with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. and from 11:00 a.m. until the time of his service Tuesday at Southeast Christian Church.
